Rosie, without a doubt, was the finest dog I've ever owned. She sparkled with joy and intensity. She was attentive and joyful in obedience, a completely natural tracker (Ivan called her his "100 point puppy") and in protection work had intense prey and fighting drives and a genetically crushing, full grip. And, she was beautiful.

Thursday, 18 January 2001, while visiting friends in Washington state, Rosie somehow got out of their dog-proof yard and was struck by a car and killed on the road in front.
We had just arrived after a very long and horrendous drive over icey roads and winter passes. I let Rosie and Gator out of the truck to run around. I didn't feel completely comfortable and kept thinking I should be outside supervising them, but compromised by standing next to the kitchen door and opening it every minute or two and calling them to check on them.
I can't in a million years understand how the dogs got out or why. I've run the events over and over again in my mind. They knew where I was, had acres in back to explore, and had to work really hard to get over or under the fence. My friend has shepherds and a schipperke, and has never had a dog get out.
In the kitchen I heard the unforgetable sound of metal on flesh and bone, and knew. We carried her back to the house where she died a few minutes later.
I am devastated. Rosie was the best dog I've ever had. She was beautiful, bold, cocky, strong, intense, smart, tough and completely self-satisfied. She looked me in the eyes when she got off the plane at 7 weeks old and said "let's do it!" She loved to work and excelled at everything she tried.
I don't know what I'm going to do now. I've lost my Rosie-grrl and there was so much I wanted us to do together.
Thank you to everyone who sent cards and letters. They mean a lot to me...

And for a brief moment its glory and beauty belong to our world.
But then it flies on again, and though we wish it could have stayed....
We feel so lucky to have seen it."
